Biashara Bridges Team meeting with the State Department for Diaspora Affairs Diaspora to discuss on Diaspora Investments.

A delegation of diaspora originally from Machakos County, led by Mr. David Mutua, a diaspora leader based in Ohio, USA, paid a courtesy visit to the State Department for Diaspora Affairs @Diaspora_KE.

The meeting, chaired by Amb. Isaiya Kabira, Secretary for Investments, Skills, and Entrepreneurship, focused on enhancing investment opportunities for the Kenyan diaspora.

During the discussions, the delegation, which was in Nairobi to witness the launch of the Kenya Diaspora Policy 2024, shared updates on their efforts to facilitate diaspora investments, including Machakos County’s initiatives such as the establishment of a dedicated Diaspora Desk and the Machakos Smart City project.

The Smart City initiative aims to attract investments in recreational facilities, hospitality, and commercial and residential developments.

Key concerns raised included the need for tailored incentives to attract diaspora investors, as regulatory challenges continue to hinder investment.

Discussions also covered structured labor mobility, skills and technology transfer, pre-departure and post-arrival training programs, and reintegration mechanisms for returning diaspora members.

Additionally, the delegation explored collaboration opportunities with SDDA on job fairs for South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc (SEKEB) counties. Financial literacy initiatives were also highlighted.

The visiting delegation comprised Dr. Muema Wambua (Deputy Director for Investments and Industry in Machakos County), Ms. Maureen Shaba (Director of Diaspora Department in Machakos County), Ms. Faith Muthoki (Acting CEO of SEKEB), Prof. Philip Mutisya, Mr. Thomas Musau, Mr. David Mutua, and Mr. David Kitonga.

The SDDA team included Ms. Irene Karari (Director and Head of Skills and Expertise Division), Mr. Edwin Limo(Director, L&P), Ms. Phyllis Githua(Head, ML&S), Ms. Elizabeth Mghanga(FSO), Ms. Anne Kimani (FSO), and Mr. John Muindi(FSO)
